What is ragga jungle?

Ragga jungle is jungle with the sound system at the front: chopped Amen breaks and deep sub-bass under Jamaican ragga and dancehall vocals. It’s where UK breakbeat culture and reggae meet head on.

It took shape in the UK in the early 1990s, with Rebel MC, later Congo Natty, among the people who pushed it, and it peaked in 1994 and 1995. Two tracks broke it wide open: “Incredible” by M-Beat featuring General Levy, and “Original Nuttah” by UK Apachi with Shy FX, out on SOUR in 1994. Both charted in the UK, though not equally. “Incredible” reached number 8 on the Official Singles Chart in the week of 24 September 1994. “Original Nuttah” reached number 39 on 1 October 1994 and lasted three weeks.

Ragga jungle is a direct branch of jungle, and one of the roots of everything that followed.
